Orthognathic Surgery

Jaw growth is a gradual process and, in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates, resulting in a host of problems that can affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. Orthognathic surgery is needed when jaws do not meet correctly and/or teeth do not seem to properly fit with the jaws. Corrective procedures involve straightening teeth with orthodontics or corrective jaw surgery to reposition misaligned jaws. The results are improved facial appearance and teeth that come together correctly and function properly. Before treatment begins, a consultation with a complete examination and x-rays is held. You and your dental team can then decide on a treatment plan together.

Candidates for corrective jaw surgery will work closely with their dentist and orthodontist during treatment. The surgery can move your teeth and jaws into a new position resulting in a more functional and attractive dental-facial relationship. Three-dimensional models are used to show how your surgery will be approached, and comprehensive facial X-rays allow you to view how your bite will be improved.
